Kumar’s early association with art was never an intended one but he was always drawn towards creativity in all its forms, as that was his destiny to be…

Kumar was born at Chanduasi, a place near Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh in the year 1941. He grew up in a household of creativity, strict discipline but an open environment where he discovered his passion for art and music very early.

As a small child, his favorite pastime was to scribble with a chalk or charcoal various shapes on the wall where the plaster had come off. Colorful kites of different shapes also fascinated him. Perhaps these were the first signs of the creative urge in him. After Kumar graduated in Science, his elders wanted to put him into job oriented higher education. But his dream was to become an artist. For him it was now time to learn, explore and formalize his art education. This meant leaving home.

Kumar joined Santiniketan in the year 1960 to Fine Arts and Crafts at Kala Bhavan. For him it was like a dream come true. It provided him an open-air laboratory for his experiments with art and an opportunity to refine his multi-dimensional talents. His early works bore a clear figurative inclination with Goddess Durga and Ganpati as the favorite themes on the precise silk scrolls characterized by bold lines and strokes.
